We were using all the money we had to operate stores. Around half of the privately-held company is owned by non-family members through an employee stock ownership plan; Cadiuex family members own most of the remainder. We think long term. CC: It was it was horrible! How by trial and error he found his way in the convenience store business. JE: And youre still working on that? That took stuff we had to buy and get to work and so forth, so the whole thing has been a battle. JE: Ive got to go back. Ive seen it myself. CC: Yeah what happened was we got three outside consultants to come to a meeting and we spent two or three days with them and we hired two of those guys, in a way. Theyve always pretty much always owned shares. I mean I go to QuikTrip and I dont buy any of the things we really sell, but I go there for certain things, cause we think our coffee is better and so. And not just about the way they were treated, but the lack of training or the kind of training they got. But those meetings were so important because if you had bad management, if you had supervisors, if you had bad stuff going on, they would tell you about it. JE: And a different era too, different times, right? for two and a half years and then we started making money. So wed put them up on the ceiling and every once in a while wed sell one of those. CC: Yes, yes, because thats the whole driving force of the company. Its no surprise that Chet Cadieux has an executive office located at the aforementioned Tulsa landmark, but hes also a member of the board of directors of both the Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Tulsa River Parks Authority. In 2014, the Cadieux family, with a net worth of $1.3 billion, held the same position. JE: Then along about that time you had this TV and radio campaign that starred Lamar. JE: Thats a great way to have your brand name out in the community. Which was really not very smart cause it stinks. CC: If thats the record youve got then thats right. People dont cook. CC: The point at that point in time way back was, were we going to get into the food business, or were we going to get into the gasoline business? In a sport of millimeters, where the slightest design adjustment could make all the difference in a photo finish, you wouldnt expect a car with a three-year-old body to be much of a contender. Because we were a convenience store, and you knew what convenience stores were like, so you didnt go in. But they dont vote, they count as one vote, all the employees in the ESOP (employee stock ownership plan) so it keeps us from being public for reporting purposes. But theyre cheaper.
